Book Review: Brown Bear and Friends, by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle

By Anne Angstadt

Warning! If you borrow Brown Bear and Friends, the toddler in your life will insist on listening to it over and over again. Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, and Baby Bear have enthralled my son since he was six months old. The simple repetitive text and bright colorful animal illustrations still fascinate him today. When I found these stories compiled as an audiobook on Hoopla and eReadsKids. I knew it would be a great opportunity to enjoy some old favorites in a new way.

Brown Bear and Friends contain the classic stories: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? and Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?  In each book an animal asks another animal what he or she sees or hears. The responding animal answers and then asks another animal. Gwyneth Paltrow reads each story and does different voices for each animal.  The second half is a Spanish translation. Soothing music accompanies each story.

Listen to these delightful stories all together on car trips or one at a time before bed. Older children could use the Spanish version to learn animal names and basic vocabulary words. If you have the books, follow along while you listen. If you don't own them, you can still enjoy all of the cute animal voices as you listen.

Borrow this audiobook today and discover a new twist on some classic stories!
