Charlotte and Ben live many miles away from each other. Charlotte is in Pennsylvania, and Ben is in Louisiana. They meet through an online version of Scrabble and get to know each other through messages in the app and eventually phone calls. Both of them feel out of place in their schools, and both are dealing with changing family situations. They each learn to lean on each other and help each other get through the difficult middle school years.

Erin Entrada Kelly’s thoughtful and relatable middle grade novel has received multiple starred reviews, and was a 2019-2020 nominee for the Georgia Children’s Book Award. You Go First is an excellent next read for fans of Wonder. It is available in print, ebook, and downloadable audiobook.
