Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with the Digital Library!

Native American Heritage Month is annually celebrated in November in the US with the goal of honoring the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in the United States*. There are many ways to celebrate, honor, and recognize Indigenous peoples history and culture this month, but here are some great ways you can digitally celebrate all month long!

You can begin your celebration by learning about the histories and cultures of over 600 Native American groups with American Indian History, an Infobase resource. American Indian History offers access to 15,000 years of culture and history and it includes primary resources, images, videos, biographies, and much more.

Interested in films? Check out Kanopy to find films about Native American culture and history and films featuring Native Americans/Indigenous peoples. You can watch up to 10 films a month on Kanopy.  Here are some great titles for this month:

Lakota Nation vs United States (2022)

Gather (2020)

We Breathe Again: The Stories of Four Alaska Native People (2017)

Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015)

Another great way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month is by actively engaging with Native American/Indigenous culture and art. Reading and listening to books or other media written by or about Native Americans is is one way you can celebrate all month long.  If you are interested in reading books by Native American/Indigenous authors, check out these titles available on Overdrive/Libby:

You can always learn more about Native American history, advocacy, and ways to celebrate Native American Heritage Month from the First Nations Development Institute.

*It is important to note that Native American History Month is inclusive of and celebrates Indigenous peoples and Native communities of the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, and American Samoa.
