Central Artist Corner presents Jeannette Barnett

About Jeannette:

"I am a native of Georgia. My career was one of Accounting and Budgets which I completed after thirty years of at Georgia Tech. I retired from Georgia Tech in 2013 and that is when this wondrous journey of an artist began for me. After I retired, I decided that this would be a period of reaching and fulfilling dreams and goals that for one reason or another did not seem obtainable before.

The hope and dream that I had held the longest was that of being an artist. I began taking classes at my local Senior Center and a whole new world opened to me. I became what I always thought I wanted to be and do. An artist. This pursuit has blessed my life beyond measure; to wake up every day and paint and read and share my art is God’s gift to me in my “second half”. To me, being an artist is joy! I fully embrace it.

Much of my art involves the African American experience as I believe it can never be over told in the affirmative. I often address issues about perceptions of beauty as reflected by the dominant culture in comparison to minority cultures, and the portrayal of persons of color in art. My art is deeply referenced to African culture; I also use my art to call the human spirit back to nature by way of landscapes and messages through my paintings. I also seek to somehow calm the spirit with my work.

I use acrylics as my main medium in my work. I also use fabric, textured paper and various types of beads depending on the subject. I have also used wood burning techniques. Pen and Ink drawings are also a part of my work."
