CRAFTer Dark – February: Roses

Milton Library hosts CRAFTer Dark, a monthly program geared toward adults. The goal is to provide programs that make art/crafts accessible to all skill levels in such a way that each participant produces a stunning piece, even with no prior experience.

This February, our CRAFTer Dark program embraced the beauty of simplicity and the power of creativity. The theme? Roses—those timeless symbols of elegance and expression. But instead of traditional brushes, we used an unexpected tool to create stunning floral art: a plastic bag.

Sounds unconventional, right? That’s exactly the point. We began by transforming everyday gallon-sized plastic bags into inflatable art instruments. Once filled with air and sealed, these bags took on an entirely new life—becoming a soft, crinkled surface that mimicked the delicate layers of rose petals. Artists painted the pointed end of the bag with vibrant acrylic paints and then gently pressed it against their paper, revealing beautifully textured blooms that seemed to almost rise from the page.

The magic wasn’t just in the technique; it was in the unpredictability. Each press with the bag created a slightly different effect, giving each piece its own character. It was a reminder that even the simplest materials can become powerful tools when you let your creativity flow.

After the roses were brought to life, participants took it a step further, adding stems, leaves, and other details with their choice of paints. The results were varied and full of personality—no two pieces were alike, each reflecting the artist’s own flair and approach.

What we loved most about this session was the freedom it allowed. There were no “rules” here, just the chance to experiment and embrace a new way of making art. It wasn’t about perfection—it was about the process, the fun of discovering something new, and the joy of seeing a blank page transform into a vivid work of art.

CRAFTer Dark isn’t just about crafting; it’s about connecting with your creative side, letting go of expectations, and seeing where the art takes you. We can’t wait to see what surprises the next session will bring!
