Calling all tweens and teens ages 10–17! Join us for CRAFTernoon at the Milton Library one Saturday each month for an hour of fun, hands-on art and craft projects. No experience needed—just bring your imagination! We explore a variety of mediums like watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels, clay, and even paper quilling. Each month is a new adventure in creativity. Registration is required, and all skill levels are welcome!
December’s CRAFTernoon welcomed our tweens and teens into a creative winter landscape! This month’s project was a mixed media artwork featuring winter trees, and it gave participants a chance to experiment with paint, paper, and simple detailing techniques—all while creating something uniquely their own.
We started with a blank canvas and a cool wintery base. Participants painted their canvases using blue acrylic paint, reminiscent of snowy skies, icy evenings, or frosty mornings. This first step set the tone for the entire piece and helped everyone warm up creatively.
As the paint dried, it was time to build the trees. Using construction paper in a variety of colors, participants cut out triangle shapes to represent stylized evergreen trees. The freedom to choose colors—traditional greens, icy blues, or even unexpected pops of color—allowed each artist to put their own spin on a winter forest.
Next came the details. With white gel pens, participants added lines, dots, and patterns to their paper trees. These small touches mimicked snow resting on branches and added texture and personality to each tree. After detailing, the trees were carefully arranged and glued onto the painted canvases, turning simple shapes into a winter scene.
To finish the artwork, we added snow! Using Q-tips dipped in white acrylic paint, participants dotted snowflakes across their canvases, creating the look of falling snow. Pre-punched silver snowflakes were added for a bit of sparkle, catching the light and giving each piece a festive, wintry feel.
The final results were beautiful and varied. This project was a great reminder that mixed media art is all about layering, experimenting, and having fun. Our December CRAFTernoon artists left with artwork they could proudly display all winter long, and we loved seeing their creativity shine. We can’t wait to see what they create next! ❄️🎨
