CRAFTernoon – November: Clay Mosaic

Calling all tweens and teens ages 10–17! Join us for CRAFTernoon at the Milton Library one Saturday each month for an hour of fun, hands-on art and craft projects. No experience needed—just bring your imagination! We explore a variety of mediums like watercolors, acrylics, oil pastels, clay, and even paper quilling. Each month is a new adventure in creativity. Registration is required, and all skill levels are welcome!

Our October CRAFTernoon was all about texture, creativity, and getting our hands a little messy—in the best possible way! This month’s project invited young artists to design their own clay mosaics using a surprising but beautiful material: beans.

Participants started with a base of soft air-dry clay, shaping it into medallions or free-form or cut with cookie cutters. Once the clay was smoothed and ready, everyone dove into bowls filled with a colorful assortment of beans—black beans, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans, and more. Using the beans like mosaic tiles, they pressed patterns, shapes, and images into the clay surface.

It was incredible to watch each piece take shape. Some teens created geometric designs with repeating colors and textures, while others crafted flowers, landscapes, and abstract art. The combination of natural tones and varied sizes of the beans gave every mosaic a unique look.

As the projects dried, they revealed beautifully tactile artworks—each one completely original. More importantly, the afternoon was filled with conversation, creativity, and the satisfaction of making something by hand.

We’re already excited for next month’s CRAFTernoon. Stay tuned for what we’ll be creating next!
