CRAFTernoon: Blooming with Creativity 🌹

February’s CRAFTernoon program brought teens and tweens together for an afternoon of creativity, color, and a little bit of artistic experimentation. This month, participants created beautiful rose paintings using acrylic paint and a surprisingly simple tool: a blown-up plastic baggie!

To start, we transformed ordinary gallon-sized plastic bags into unique painting tools. Each baggie was filled with air and tied off, creating a soft, rounded surface with pointed corners. Participants applied acrylic paint to one of the pointed ends, then gently pressed the painted tip onto their paper. As the crinkled plastic touched the surface, it created layered, textured shapes that looked just like rose petals. With a few careful presses and a little imagination, vibrant roses began to bloom across the page.

Once the flowers were finished, artists added stems and leaves using green paint or markers. The results were wonderfully varied—each painting had its own personality, color palette, and style.

This project was a great reminder that art tools don’t have to be fancy to produce beautiful results. With a little creativity, even something as simple as a plastic bag can become the key to a unique painting technique.

CRAFTernoon continues to be a space where tweens and teens can relax, experiment with new art methods, and share their creativity with others. We loved seeing all the blooming roses this month and can’t wait to see what everyone creates next! 🎨
