Hello, hello! Thanksgiving Day arrives next week. Hooray!
I honestly cannot tell you when I absolutely fell in love with Thanksgiving. I think it was a decade ago or a bit less when I noticed how much I look forward to it. I did not have a great epiphany; It is not aligned with anything super special in my life.
However, I think the special nature of it does not mark an event; but, instead, it is tied to a feeling of slowing down for a few days; spending time with family and friends; watching old movies; and listening to music that captures life’s moments. It has to do with the colors of the leaves; their rustling in the wind, and quiet moments. It is a feeling of time changing yet standing still. It’s about a hot bowl of soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. It’s also about getting in touch with old friends, near and far. It is about finding refuge in places and things, longings and belongings.
That’s why, as we go into the richness of the holiday season, you are wished all the best. Make it what you want it to be. Rest and relax. Go grab that stack of books you’ve been wanting to read; flip through the pages of magazines and peruse the beautiful things; sit on your favorite porch, in the cold, wearing that old sweater, and laugh, or share a memory. Then, make plans to stop by your local library to chat it up with the people waiting for your visit; check out something, and take it with you. After all, you’ll need something else to read when you finish that stack you had by the bed.
Seek and experience gratefulness; share in community; and have the best Thanksgiving ever!
