Directors Blog – September 2025

There are some folks who enjoy spending time observing human nature. It can be fascinating to watch the interaction of children with their caregivers, or to watch the goings and comings of bus riders, or to stroll through a library and witness the way people experience various aspects of it.

Perhaps none of this requires interaction, unless you see someone you know, or need to ask a question of a library staff member. But the best thing about libraries is that you are invited to come inside, look around, research, study, attend a class, or program. Bring someone with you; ask for assistance if needed. Also, staff are ready to make reading suggestions for you or to make you acquainted with programs, services, and events that may interest you.

Additionally, technology is a major part of what libraries offer for your use. Ask about plans for computer classes and upcoming job skills training or the days when companies will be onsite presenting a job fair.

All those things are possible because a world of opportunities awaits you at the library. Place library visits on your to do list this fall.

There are lots of programs, events, and things to do throughout all 34 libraries. You will find two events of special note. One is that September is Library Card Sign Up Month. Also, on Saturday, October 25t,h from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the annual One Book, One Read program will be held at the Central Library. The featured book is Good Dirt, by New York Times bestselling author Charmaine Wilkerson. Her thought-provoking book will be just in time to kick-start your seasonal reading. That event is sponsored by the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Foundation.

See you soon!
