April is Jazz Appreciation Month. This style of music has a rich heritage and an era devoted to it called the Jazz Age. Jazz has transformed over time. During this month, why not peruse some of the Library’s electronic resources such as Kanopy, OverDrive, Freegal and Hoopla to learn about the history and legacy of Jazz.
Take a look at the history of Jazz by reading The History of Jazz by Ted Gioia. Delve deeper into the development of Jazz with Jazz: Its Evolution and Essence by Andre Hodeir or Bob Blumenthal’s Book Jazz.
Perhaps you would prefer watching the history of Jazz. If this is the case, you can watch Jazz by Ken Burns or History of Jazz Oxygen for the Ears or Jazz on a Summer’s Day. The Girls in the Band gives a glimpse into females in the world of Jazz.
Remembering Jazz is a sound, you may want to hear some Jazz. Here are a few in Freegal to get you started:
Just the Two of Us by Grover Washington Jr
Sonny Rollins Plays by Sonny Rollins
The Essential Kenny G by Kenny G
Ella Fitzgerald by Ella Fitzgerald
Forever, For Always, For Luther
Because Jazz is for all ages, here are a couple of resources for the young and young at heart: Jazztime and Sonny's Bridge.
Just as the title of Alyn Shipton's book, Jazz: A Personal Journey, it is truly a personal journey for each individual.
Jazz is so vast, there is no way to convey the depth of this topic in this post. The hope is to spark your interest or entice you to learn more about Jazz with the assistance of the Electronic Resources of the Fulton County Library System.
