One of the Netflix’s most binge-worthy shows, Squid Games, just released a new season and I am excited for another chapter of this South Korean dystopian drama. While re-watching the past two seasons in preparation for the latest season, I have reignited my desire to learn Korean and my passion for learning world languages. Self-study can be challenging, but I have turned to the library’s wealth of digital resources to start this new journey!
I’ve been able to begin learning the basics of Korean on Mango Languages, a free digital language learning app. (When I’m feeling a bit more ambitious, I’ll start a course in German too because why not? )
Mango Languages offers courses in over 40 world languages for adults, kids, and teens. You can learn a new language via puzzles and quizzes, listen to conversations from native speakers, and gain cultural insight while building foundational language skills.
Squid games is an international hit, but before the world fell in love with it, I fell in love with East Asian cinema and culture. A great way to start engaging with the Korean language is through watching movies such as Parasite, Train to Busan, and Old Boy which are available on Kanopy. Kanopy has a large collection of Asian cinema, including Korean films. With your library card you can watch 10 films a month on Kanopy, which equals hours of language practice!
If you are a binge watcher like me, Hoopla offers a Bingepass called “AsianCrush” which has a ton of curated Korean movies and TV shows that you can watch over 7 days or a weekend. There’s also curated Japanese and Chinese content as well included in the Bingepass, so it’s perfect for those who may know an East Asian language (or two), those who are learning a new language, or for those who just love East Asian cinema.
Whether you’re starting a new language journey or brushing up on your skills the digital library has something for you!
