Mental Health Awareness Month has been celebrated in May each year since its establishment in 1949. Its purpose is "to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness" according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
