February is National Embroidery Month! Embroidery is an ancient art form that is practiced by a wide variety of people around the world. The earliest known examples of embroidery are thousands of years old from areas within present-day Egypt and China. As the artform developed in different parts of the world, some very distinct artforms were created. For example, samplers, showcase the stitcher’s ability to create do multiple types of stitches. Other examples include elaborate tapestries, like the Bayeux tapestry, pictured to the right.
The term embroidery includes many crafts that involve a needle and thread, for example cross stitch, crewel work, and needlepoint. Embroidery is a versatile art form that can be used to embellish fabric and clothing as well as to create detailed pictures. Some forms of embroidery are also used to mend holes or other signs of wear in clothing in an aesthetically pleasing way.
Today, many embroidered fabrics and articles of clothing are machine-made, but embroidering by hand is still a popular hobby. If you are interested in learning how to embroider, take a look at the book list below!
