National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month – September 15 to October 15, 2025

Drink an horchata to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15)!

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Chile.

Horchata is a common drink in Hispanic countries today, but it originated as ‘kuunu aya’ in Nigeria and Mali since 2400 B.C.  It’s possible that the Moors brought the drink to Spain and Portugal and the drink got the name ‘horchata’ in Valencia, Spain.

Horchata is made of white rice soaked in water, and flavored with cinnamon, almonds, tiger nuts and maybe a little sugar.  The ingredients are blended and then strained to make the drink smooth.  There are different versions of the drink.  Some like it with milk and some add vanilla or coconut.

Enjoy an horchata at Mexican, Salvadoran or other Hispanic bakeries or restaurants to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.
