October is National Pizza Month. To understand how October became National Pizza Month, you have to meet Gerry Durnell. Durnell was a pizzeria owner in Indiana in 1980s, who wanted to grow his business. To his dismay, he couldn’t find any pizzeria specific trade magazines or shows. He started Pizza Today to fill this gap in the market. He also celebrated the first issue by declaring the month National Pizza Month. Many sources claim that congress declared October 1987 as National Pizza Month, but this is a fact that is difficult to confirm. Regardless, Pizza Today continues to produce materials and brand kits intend to help pizzerias nationwide showcase their love of this cheesy treat!
