For Black History Month- Told in Black Voices - the Central Library Youth Services department hosted a Traffic Stoplight Craft , opens a new windowprogram to honor Garrett Morgan, the inventor of the traffic signal. The patent for his design was granted on November 20, 1923. His design is a t-shaped, three-position standing signal. Despite it not being the first traffic signal, his design laid the framework for the three-light traffic signal we see today. Earlier designs only had two signals for "stop" and "go," but his additional signal provided guidance for crossing vehicles. Read more about Garret Morgan and his patent here, opens a new window.
