The field of librarianship has expanded its view on language since the creation of the Dewey decimal system in the 19th century. There was a strong focus on the Western language families, the classical languages and Latin.  These are rich areas of language research and skill building, but they aren't the extent of the language focused literature. As the world has become more global, there has been an expansion of content regarding languages outside of the scope, such as Southeast Asia or continent of Africa.  Many libraries in the United States focus on English languages content as it is the main circulation language, so the increased trade and communication of the modern age have also increased the diversity of this section.
