Book Review: Small Spaces by Katherine Arden

Looking for your next read? Check out Small Spaces by Katherine Arden, reviewed by Fulco Library staff, Meredith L.

Ollie loves to read so when she comes across a woman about to throw a book into the water she can’t help but rescue it. The book turns out to be a creepy tale of a family and someone called “the smiling man.” The next day Ollie and her class visit a local farm where she comes across the graves of the very people in her rescued book.

All this seems like a spooky coincidence until her class is stranded in a mysterious mist after their school bus breaks down. With the teacher having gone back to the farm for help, Ollie and her classmates are left on the bus with a driver who warns “at nightfall they will come for the rest of you.” When Ollie’s broken watch flashes the message “run” she decides to do just that. With no help in sight, only two of her classmates decide to take a chance and go with her. Will the three of them make it out of the mist and back to safety? Find out in this spooky middle grade story.
