Whenever I dive into a new novel, I am full of anticipation. The condition of the book really creates an experience for me: is it used or old? Is there a lingering aroma of ancient paper from sitting and being forgotten on a shelf for generations? Are there brand-new pages begging you to flip them? Is there a smooth spine asking to be cracked for the first time?
A book can send me into a whole new space before I even read the first page! The tale has already embedded details of it's character into my experience. Now, with the modern access of technology and the ability to bask in e-books galore, or tune in and out with audiobooks, those experiences have morphed. While a digital rendition of a book is incomparable to a book in print, those sensory entanglements are still present. Audiobooks paired with noise cancelling headphones can really submerge you sonically into a story. From a lively speaker to soothing narration, these voices will carry you in between the words, fighting the character's battles as your own. Last, but not least, are the wonderful digital copies of books, those on-the-go stories, a.k.a that little pocket library. With pixelated ink that never fades and image quality that immerses readers into scenes, sometimes inconceivable to our ordinary brains. There is an intangible world of wonder in books, regardless of the form they appear in.
So, take a step towards the future, into the land where old fairytales are being told through new lenses (or screens and speakers if you're into that kind of thing). FulCo's Digital Library, opens a new window
