I loved reading the Animorphs books while I was a kid and a teenager.  I was very surprised to meet Katherine Applegate, the author of the books at the Central Library.

She and I spoke about her series Animorphs, Remnants and Everworld.

Animorphs is about six teenagers, five humans and one alien, who change into animals or other sentient beings in order to fight one group of aliens, the Yeerks who want to take over humans on Earth.

The series was my favorite and kept me reading when I didn’t like to read in school.  For example, in the sixth grade, I pretended to read, “The Island of the Blue Dolphins” and “The Phantom Tollbooth”.  Today, as an adult and a librarian, I know that those are very valued stories, but as a sixth grader, I couldn’t focus on reading them.  I should try to read them now to give them their due respect.  Ms. Applegate also didn’t like to read as a kid.  Perhaps her writing style appealed to me for that trait that we both share.

However, Animorphs made me hungry to read.  I couldn’t wait to read more about the six main characters, Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, Marco and Ax.  Their fictional fight activated my imagination and made me keep on reading.

I don’t know if you’ve ever met your favorite author from your childhood, but meeting Ms. Applegate was a great experience.

The library has many titles from the Animorphs series.  Check one out.
