National Fair Housing Month

April is National Fair Housing Month! The Fair Housing Act (FHA) was passed 58 years ago, prohibiting housing discrimination based on race or color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability. Because the FHA is federal law, it applies to the entire US and keeps landlords, real estate companies, banks or other lending institutions from making housing unavailable to a person based any of the above categories.

Today the US Department of Housing and Urban Development tracks data related to housing across the country and provides resources to residents in need of assistance. Information related to demographics, affordability, and socioeconomics can all be found on their website: https://data.hud.gov/. If you need housing-related help try this page: https://www.hud.gov/helping-americans. The department is also responsible for investigating and tracking FHA complaints here: hud.gov/reporthousingdiscrimination

In the library, you can learn about the history of housing in America as well as the ideas and innovations making housing more accessible for all. See the book list below for recommendations. If you are need of assistance with housing in the Atlanta and Fulton area, the library offers in-house social workers who may be able to help. Here is their page: https://www.fulcolibrary.org/social-services.
