Hank’s Big Day. This story of a bug by Evan Kuhlman is a sweet picture book about an unlikely friendship between a small bug and a girl.

The story begins by letting us get to know Hank, a pill bug, and his daily routine. He wakes up, has breakfast and then sets off on a journey through the grass and over a sidewalk. For a bug so small, no adventure is without danger, but he makes it across safely and meets up with his best friend, a girl named Amelia. Amelia helps him climb to the top of her helmet and together they play away the day, pretending to be flying around the world, just like the great aviator Amelia Earhart. The view from the top of Amelia’s helmet is truly amazing for a small bug like Hank! After a day of play and fun, it’s time to say goodnight. Hank climbs down, says goodbye to his friend and makes the journey back home under a rock for a good night’s sleep.

Friendships come in all shapes and sizes, and fun can be had by all. In this beautifully illustrated picture book, we feel the connection and joy that these two characters share.

If you have a little one who likes to play with creepy crawlies, then check out this book to read together.
