When you are in Ms. Fizzle’s class, you never know what to expect on a field trip. She gives interactive learning a whole new meaning. In this story, the class is disappointed when Ms. Frizzle tells them they are going to the water treatment plant for their next field trip. They board the school bus as usual, but after they go through a tunnel, everything changes. They are dressed in scuba outfits and the bus is rising up into the clouds. They come out of the clouds as raindrops and flow into a river, eventually making their way into the water treatment plant. As the class swims through the water system, Ms. Fizzle teaches them how water is purified for everyday use. At the end of the trip, they splash out into the school restroom sink, quickly becoming regular sized kids again. When they return to their classroom, Ms. Frizzle pretends nothing out of the ordinary has happened and has the class make a diagram of the water treatment system to show what they have learned.
As a child, I thought it would be amazing to be in Ms. Frizzle’s class. She makes tedious subjects fun and interesting. This story is the first of many of Ms. Fizzle’s class adventures. Her class visits the human body, the solar system, the center of earth, and more. I was amazed to see how many more of these books were written since I left elementary school. Now there is even a Magic School Bus television series.
