Happy Black History Month Fulton County! We are continuing our celebration of the Year of the Book this February at the Digital Library by celebrating and uplifting Black voices all month long. Black History Month in the US is traditionally celebrated in February, but we can always celebrate the history and contributions of Black Americans all throughout the year.
Learn about Black history, famous historical figures, and important historic movements with African American History Online. African American History Online is an Infobase resource so it integrates easily into Google classroom and you can find resources for students of all ages and learning levels. If you are not sure where to begin your educational journey, check out this short video about Black action figures and the power of representation and inclusion.
Check out a great book by a Black author this month (or all year long) from the Palace Project's Black History Month list! This year we are primarily featuring Black women writers such as Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jesmyn Ward. The Palace Project is our newest e-reading platform at Fulton County and it provides access to thousands of titles without holds, waits, or checkout limits. Try out the Palace Project to read Black voices this month!
Another great way to celebrate Black History Month this year is to watch, enjoy, and discuss a selection of films on Kanopy. Try watching some of notable blaxploitation films from the 1960s and 1970s such as Black Caesar, Foxy Brown, Dolemite, or Shaft and learn about the history of the genre and its influence. If you are interested in history, drama, or even romance, Kanopy has those films as well so be sure to explore the collection to find some great movies this month!
No matter what you choose to do to celebrate Black History this month, remember that you can always continue your celebration throughout the year!
