The Fulton County Library System has kicked off a new cultural partnership with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta (TECO), and the launch event made quite an impression.

Community leaders, library supporters, and guests from all around came together to mark the occasion, which featured remarks from several notable speakers, cultural presentations, and maybe the most talked-about moment of the afternoon, a live boba tea demonstration.

Library Director Gayle Holloman set the tone early, commenting about the partnership and how it will open new doors for patrons across Fulton County to access global perspectives through programming they might not otherwise encounter.
Deputy Directors Dr. Cheryl Small and Teryn Gillian also spoke, touching on how collaborations like this one tend to ripple outward, strengthening not just individual programs but the library system's broader mission around lifelong learning and community engagement.

Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts weighed in on the value of international partnerships in a county as diverse as this one, while Georgia State Senator Sonya Halpern, who serves as Minority Caucus Vice Chair, praised the initiative as a model for what culturally driven programming can look like when done well.

On the TECO side, Director General Jared Lin was candid about his enthusiasm. He spoke about using the partnership as a platform to introduce Taiwanese culture to Fulton County residents through future events, workshops, and programming that go beyond surface-level representation.

Also, to launch the partnership, TECO has donated over 200 Taiwanese books to the Fulton County Library System Collection and also offered a special VR Screening experience of Taiwanese films for attendees to explore. Guests enjoyed browsing the sample books from the new collection, coming to shelves soon!

The boba tea demonstration was a crowd-pleaser. Guests watched the preparation process up close, learned a bit about the drink's origins and cultural roots, and got to sample the finished product, which, for many, probably sparked more curiosity about Taiwanese culture than any brochure could have.
Looking ahead, the two organizations plan to develop a range of programming together: cultural events, educational workshops, performances, and more. The goal is to give residents of all ages genuine opportunities to engage with international perspectives close to home.
