Milton Library hosts CRAFTer Dark, a monthly program geared toward adults. The goal is to provide programs that make art/crafts accessible to all skill levels in such a way that each participant produces a stunning piece, even with no prior experience.
July’s CRAFTer Dark program invited our adult creators to dig deep—literally—into the pages of the past. In celebration of our Summer Reading Program theme, Unearth a Story, we explored a companion activity called Unearth a Poem, where participants transformed vintage book pages into illustrated works of art.
Each artist was given a page from an old, worn book and followed a simple but inspiring prompt:
Find the poem hidden within.
Participants scanned the text, circling words and phrases that spoke to them, gradually revealing unexpected poems tucked inside the prose. Once their “found poems” emerged, they brought the pages to life using colored pencils, letting imagery bloom around their chosen lines.
The results were absolutely fabulous—beautiful, thoughtful, and full of personality. Some poems were whimsical, others reflective, and every illustrated page became its own one-of-a-kind artifact.
