For the CreativX Lab session this week, the teens focused on cybersecurity, its necessity, and how to protect themselves against potential scams. Unfortunately, in today's world, scams are prevalent, especially online. Digital threats can happen anywhere: text messages, social media, websites, and emails. To help prepare the teens, CreativX Lab created tasks to help them learn about digital literacy and scam detection skills.
The workshop included tasks divided into three categories: Pattern recognition, URL Detective, and Real Scam Analysis. The Pattern Recognition section help participates identify these common tactics scams use such as a short deadline, a fake URL, or an offer that is simply too good to be true. For URL Detective section, this task taught the teens how to examine URLs as they can be clues if something is a scam. For example, hovering the cursor over a link allows users to see the full URL. Fake websites are created to trick people into clicking on the link, thinking it’s the real website. After the lessons, the teens were given scenarios of scams, so when they see a threat in real life, they will know how to act accordingly.
After finishing all the tasks, the teens were awarded a certificate. Now the teens are ready if they ever encounter a scam.
