The Best Buy Teen Tech Center (BBTTC) welcomed Quyana Barrow as the instructor for the Teen Podcast Workshop. Barrow, a producer of her own podcast Culturalist, came to teach teens how to run their own podcast. A two-session
program focusing on these questions: What is a podcast? Podcast, a trending media format, either in audio or video episodes, focus on a specific topic. How do you create a podcast? There are multiple platforms to start a podcast, such as YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcast. What will your podcast be about? A podcast can be about anything. How do you find your audience? It can’t just be friends and family. How do you want to structure episodes? From there, all the teens found a topic they wanted to focus on and started mapping out their outline for their first episode!
Notable ideas: a hotdog stand podcast where a boy wanted to talk about the start of his business, a Godzilla a podcast discussing the movies and the cultural impact on society, and a stop-motion animation where a teen would discuss a stop-motion film project he was working on.
The second session was where all the fun started because the kids got to enter our Podcast studio to record. Before the teens could began, Quyana gave a tour of the studio, demonstrating each piece of equipment and how they play a part in a successful podcast. With Quyana as the sound engineer, she directed each teen on their podcast, making sure no one went off topic. In the end, all the teens had fun making a podcast and were inspired to come back to the Best Buy Teen Tech Center to continue.
