National Houseplant Month

January is National Houseplant Month. Houseplants have long been a popular way to add greenery indoors, study plants, and improve indoor air quality. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese were known to keep houseplants as status symbols and for aesthetic purposes. For several centuries, houseplants were somewhat less common among the middle and lower classes as they were often expensive to purchase and care for. By the Victorian era, houseplants were easier to obtain and widely popular, with trends like fern collecting taking off. After World War II they were staples of interior design and could be found in many households. Today, houseplants are still very popular as evidenced by the variety of plants and resources available.

While the official National Houseplant Appreciation Day is on January 10th, the library can help you care for your indoor plants all year long. Try out some of the books suggested below!
