For April, We Create Tech help homeschool kids develop their engineering and architectural skills by building bridges. First, they had to draw the design of the bridge to give an idea of where to start. After they finished brainstorming, they were ready to start building. However, they would be a catch: the participants could only use the materials given to them, such as popsicle sticks, wooden sticks, two foam cups, paper, and scotch tape. In addition, the bridge had to be at least an arm's length.
With these obstacles, the task proved challenging for some. Once the participants thought their bridge was sturdy enough, they had to pass the bean test. To test the durability of their bridge, Mrs. Shana the instructor used bags of beans, each one increasing in weight. If their bridge could pass all the bean tests, they would be successful. Obviously, not everyone succeeded on their first try, but with diligence and teamwork, everyone was able to build a sturdy bridge.
