Unearth A Story: Best Buy Geek Squad Academy

To start our Summer Reading Program: Unearth a Story, Geek Squad Academy came back to the Best Buy Teen Tech Center. For three days, kids from age 8-17 learn everything about technology with sessions focusing on 3D design, AI, robotics, music production, and game design. This is the second year Geek Squad has come, yet everything would still be new to participants. The first day was where kids learned the basics and got a feel of how the equipment works. Whereas the second day was more hands-on, allowing kids to apply what they learned the day before to the technology they had that day.

In the robotics sessions, kids got to code robots. The instructors set up stations testing the participants' block coding skills. The challenges included racing their robots, an obstacle course, and bowling where the robots had to hit as many pins as they could.

Over in the Game Design sessions, they used Make Code Arcade to create their own games. Similar to the robotics session, the Game Design sessions taught the kids block coding.

In 3D Design, kids created a virtual house in SketchUp Make and, within it, made furniture to match their design.

In the AI sessions, they participants made their own AI agents and learn how AI can be used for good. Within this class, they learn how to train AI.

In music production, they made their own songs. Towards the end, each person got to present their songs to everyone.

The third day was the Kickoff party, where participants got their Junior Agents certificates. After the ceremony, the kids enjoyed the Kickoff Party on the first floor. There, the participants played life-sized games and enjoyed some music and dancing. Ultimately, Geek Squad Academy is a fun learning experience giving a wide range of kids an opportunity to learn about tech.
