“With The Fire on High” is a first-person narrative, through the eyes of the protagonist Emoni Santiago. Emoni, a teen mother, has a certain amount of maturity as the work begins but is conflicted on many issues that prevent her coming-of-age process.
Most notably, there is a tension between Emoni's need to be a good mother to her daughter Emma (Baby Girl) while at the same time establishing herself as a woman. The emphasis on Emoni's perspective as a mother becomes more complicated by her mother's death and the absence of her father.
